Ten years ago: The White House acknowledged that first lady Nancy Reagan had used astrological advice to help schedule her husband’s activities. The unflattering revelations surfaced in an unpublished memoir by former chief of staff Donald Regan.

Five years ago: American sailor Terry M. Helvey confessed to stomping to death Allen Schindler, a homosexual shipmate, but told his court-martial in Japan that he was drunk and did not plan the killing. Helvey was sentenced to life in prison.

One year ago: A group of Texas separatists ended a weeklong standoff with authorities; however, two armed followers fled into the woods. One was killed, the other eventually captured. Silver Charm won the 123rd Kentucky Derby.
