Ferris’ Win Clinches Tie For Gsl Title

First-place Ferris was pushed to the limit by last-place Mt. Spokane on Tuesday, but the struggle was worth it.

Josh Shelton lofted a sacrifice fly to center field for the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as visiting Ferris (15-2, 14-1) edged Mt. Spokane 2-1 to clinch at least a tie for the Greater Spokane League title.

Ferris, which won its 14th consecutive game, has a three-game lead over defending champion Mead with three to go. The GSL champion receives a two-day bye at the District 8-4A tournament and an automatic berth to regionals.

Ferris has won six GSL titles, four during the 1990s. The Saxons last won the title two years ago.

Shelton brought home Chris Schuchart, who scored the other Saxons run on Justin Drake’s triple in the fourth. League earned-run average leader Eric Sandberg struck out 10 for the win, while Joe Kernkamp and Jamie Ham combined to strike out eight for the Wildcats (2-15, 2-13).

Elsewhere, University moved into third place because the Price was more than right.

Andy Price hit two home runs, a grand slam and three-run shot, as the Titans (10-7, 10-5) defeated Shadle Park 20-7 in five innings at U-Hi.

Price had a three-run homer during an eight-run second and a grand slam during a seven-run fourth. The senior hadn’t homered this year.

Kyle Sale and Brandon Florence were a combined 7 for 8 with eight RBIs for U-Hi. Derek Bishop tripled for the Highlanders (6-11, 5-10), whose hopes are fading for a top-six, district-qualifying finish.

Zach Yarbrough struck out 11 in 6 innings and Ben Coffman tied the game with a two-run single in the seventh as Gonzaga Prep (8-9, 8-7) took a big step toward the playoffs with a 9-8 win over visiting Central Valley (10-7, 9-6).

David Sullivan’s infield single scored Brian Frankovic with the winner, moving Prep into fifth place. Yarbrough also scored three runs and homered in the fourth. CV’s Chad Adamson and Brad Moss had three hits apiece.

North Central (8-8, 7-8) also improved its playoff hopes, as Nick Froscheiser had four hits and three RBIs during an 18-8 win over Lewis and Clark (9-8, 7-8) at Hart Field.

NC tied LC for sixth, two games ahead of Shadle with three left.

LC committed eight errors, leading to 16 unearned runs. NC has won five of its last six.

Mead (12-5, 11-4) remained one game ahead of U-Hi, as Neil Logue improved to 5-0 and Kyle Ellenz was 3 for 5 with two runs during a 20-6 win at Rogers (3-12, 2-13).

Sam Hess and Keith Stamps were both 2 for 3, and Stamps added three RBIs for Mead. Taylor West and Nick Scott homered for the Pirates.

Great Northern League

Colville (17-1, 11-1) avenged its lone loss and clinched the league title with a 6-1 win at Chewelah (12-6, 8-4).

Jason Spears (9-0) pitched a six-hitter for Colville, striking out seven and walking two. Shane Meinhold doubled twice and had three RBIs for the Indians, who lost to Chewelah 7-4 two weeks ago.

Ryan Bradeen added a two-run double during Colville’s four-run third. Colville and the league’s No. 2 receive byes to the District 7-2A tournament, which begins Tuesday at Nos. 3 and 4. The field is set, although the order may change.

Joe Gaines singled home Brandon Moore in the seventh as host Medical Lake (13-5, 9-3) edged Lakeside 10-9 to take over second place alone.

The Cardinals scored five in the first, as Josh Earley hit a three-run homer and Moore a solo shot. Iain Ashley had four hits as the Eagles (8-8, 7-5) rallied, but reliever Jeff Mitchell entered in the sixth to check Lakeside on one hit.

Bill Weed had a two-run double during a four-run fifth, and Aaron Linehan fanned eight in five innings as visiting Pullman (8-10, 6-6) defeated Riverside 11-6.

Seth Schurtz of the Rams (4-14, 1-11) hit his fifth homer, a two-run shot in the seventh. Riverside pitchers walked 12.

Jesse Campbell was 4 for 4 with four RBIs as Newport (4-12, 4-8) defeated visiting Deer Park 10-8 to clinch the league’s sixth and final playoff spot. Adam Stevens and Andrew Helm homered for the Stags (3-15, 2-10).

Bi-County League

Davenport (16-2, 13-1) won the league title with a 12-0, 10-0 sweep over visiting Liberty (13-6, 12-2).

Casey Parsons (6-0) pitched a two-hitter as the Gorillas won the opener in five innings. Mark Hall (7-0) fanned nine in the second game, allowing four hits.

Davenport tied Almira/Coulee-Hartline for last year’s title.
