Ev’S Socs Honored
East Valley High School’s community service program has won two prestigeous awards.
EV’s SOCS program - Student Oriented Community Services - was the education division winner of United Way’s Volunteer of the Year Award, and also received the JC Penney Golden Rule award.
The awards include a $1,000 cash prize, plus recognition that SOCS makes a difference in the community.
The awards were presented on April 29 at the Ag-Trade Center.
SOCS involves about 65 students, said director Lynn Lauer.
“Through giving of their time and talents, they look at life through the eyes of many people who are less fortunate,” Lauer wrote in her nominating letter.
The SOCS program includes several ongoing projects, including a Christmas gift distribution, a penny drive which supports an annual senior citizens dance, support of a Romanian orphanage, and regular support of the Union Gospel Mission, Anna Ogden Hall and the school district’s library nights.
As a local Golden Rule winner, the SOCS program can compete for $10,000 in the national awards.
