Construction Project Closes Sandwich Shop
The Sandwich Garden, a popular lunch spot for 23 years in the Skywalk system next to Nordstrom, lost its lease and closed Friday and is looking for a new location downtown.
Construction on the River Park Square project necessitated cutting off water and electricity to the shop, and to the One Hour Photo shop next door, said Sandwich Garden owner Pat Matthews. The photo shop has relocated nearby in the skywalk.
The restaurant will continue to deliver sandwiches from its location at the Heart Institute, 122 W. 7th Ave. Matthews said he’d like to find a new location within “rock-throwing” distance from his old spot, and is negotiating on a few sites.
Lines were especially long during the lunch hour Friday, and most regular customers asked where the business plans to relocate.
Manager Peter Parker, who has been at the restaurant since it began 23 years ago, assured people they could still get deliveries.
“I don’t want to see anyone downtown going through sandwich withdrawal,” Matthews said.
Relocating and reopening should take about three months, he said.
