Griffin Has Star Billing At Fights

Montell “Ice” Griffin headlines the next pro boxing card at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino in Worley, Idaho.

Griffin is 31-1 and the only fighter to defeat Roy Jones. His opponent for the June 3 fight hasn’t been determined.

Skipper “Saigon” Kelp, of Las Vegas, and Spokane’s Rick Welliver are other featured fighters on the card. Tickets are on sale at G&B Select-A-Seat outlets and the Bingo/Casino.

NIC lands pair

Two prep standouts have orally committed to play for the North Idaho College men’s basketball team. They are Nick Booms, 6-foot-8 and 215 pounds, from Lafayette, Colo., and Bryson Tiedeman, 6-10 and 192, from British Columbia.

Booms averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tiedeman averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks.

Bay, Bevacqua honored

NIC baseball players Jason Bay and Al Bevacqua were selected All-Region 18 second team.

Bay, a sophomore from Trail, B.C., shattered the school record with 21 homers this season. The Gonzaga-bound center fielder batted .394 after establishing an NIC record at .447 last season.

Bevacqua, a second baseman from Rathdrum, batted .389. He had 43 RBIs and scored 44 runs.

DH: Rusty Gray, Salt Lake.

Second team - Infielders: Nick Gretz, Southern Idaho; Gabe Haws, Ricks; Tyler Peterson, Eastern Utah; Travis Beck, Utah Valley; Al Bevacqua, North Idaho. Outfielders: Jason Bay, North Idaho; Dane Cousins, Colorado Northwestern; Craig Peterson, Salt Lake. Pitchers: Mike Gargano, Dixie; Zac Davis, Utah Valley; Matt Kroon, Utah Valley.
