Scapca To Hold No-Burn Workshop

From Staff Reports

The Spokane County Air Pollution Control Authority (SCAPCA) will hold a workshop and public input session Wednesday on proposed expansions of no-burn areas in the county.

The 7 p.m. workshop will be held at Freeman Elementary School, 14917 S. Jackson Road, in Rockford.

County staff will discuss several proposed options for reducing residential burning of yard and garden debris. Proposals range from minor adjustments of current boundaries to the ban of yard and garden debris burning countywide.

The reduction in burning is being fueled by evidence of the negative health impacts of breathing smoke particles and by state law. Under state law, the no-burn area must expand to include, at a minimum, urban growth areas of the county and those areas with a history of air pollution levels exceeding Federal standards. A pre-workshop open house will begin at 6:30 p.m., allowing more time for the public to meet with staff to discuss boundaries, review maps and ask questions.

Those unable to attend a workshop may contact SCAPCA at 456-4727 for workshop materials. Written comments may be e-mailed by May 20 to scapca@scapca.org or mailed by May 20 to SCAPCA, 1101 W. College No.403, Spokane, WA, 99201.
