Getting To Know You

Daniel Sprague of Nashville, Tenn., stares down a cicada he placed on his nose. The bugs, known for the loud, shrill sound the male makes by vibrating an organ on its undersurface, are beginning to emerge from the ground as part of their uncommon 13-year life cycle. They will live above ground for about five weeks, then lay eggs that will not hatch until 2011.
