Cda Charges From Loser’S Bracket To Capture State A-1 Softball Title

Coeur d’Alene’s girls won the State A-1 softball title the hard way, advancing through the loser’s bracket by winning six consecutive loser-out games.

Saturday, at Rupert, the Vikings defeated Minico 7-3 and then won back-to-back games over Centennial by scores of 3-2 and 4-2 to claim the title.

The Coeur d’Alene High boys won their second State A-1 golf title in three years with a two-day total of 638 at Avondale in Hayden Lake.

Sandpoint’s Caleb Bowman won his third straight 200-meter title and two other gold medals as the State A-1 track and field championships concluded at Boise State University’s Ed Jacoby Track.

Bowman led a 1-2-3 finish for North Idaho sprinters in the 100, running 11.13 seconds to edge Lewiston’s Rick McCrery (11.29) and Lake City’s Scott Bushnell (11.30). He also ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team.

On the girls side, Coeur d’Alene’s Brenda Nipp, who was competing with a sore quadriceps, faded to third in the 400 and placed but didn’t medal in the 100 (seventh) and 200 (eighth).

Kootenai High’s Annie Goodson picked up three medals, one for a first-place finish in the 400 meters, in the A-4 meet. Goodson ran her career total to 16 medals by taking second in the 100 meters and third in the 200.

Heather Hoeck and Wendy Vork of Kellogg won gold medals in the girls A-2 meet. Hoeck won the 200 meters at the wire. Vork won the high jump in a jump-off.
