Candidate Cancels 5-Keg Fund-Raiser
Phil Kiver, a candidate for Spokane County commissioner, has canceled his five-keg fund-raising party.
The Eastern Washington University freshman said he changed his plans for the May 21 beer bash at the urging of one of his professors. He also was unable to obtain a liquor license.
In addition, the band Kiver claimed to have hired said it was not involved in the party. The owner of the property that Kiver had advertised as the site of the party said the young politician had never asked to use the site.
Kiver had organized the party to celebrate his 21st birthday, raise money for his campaign and demonstrate the civility of Eastern students.
Kiver said he will hold a press conference June 12 on the steps of the Spokane County Jail before beginning a 15-day jail sentence. Kiver, who ran for mayor of Cheney last fall, pleaded guilty to falsely reporting his car stolen to cover for allegedly stealing his opponent’s campaign signs.
“I might might as well use this as an opportunity to find out how prisoners are treated and how our tax dollars are spent,” he said.
