Valley Christian, Nwc Win Districts
Double winners Jared Evans and Christian Zorn led the Valley Christian boys and Northwest Christian girls to team titles at the District 7 B track and field championships Thursday at Whitworth College.
Evans won the boys 110- and 300-meter hurdles for VC, which had 110 points to top the 13-team field.
Zorn’s wins in the girls 100 and 200 helped NWC score 102 points, best in a 16-team field. The Crusaders also piled up points by sweeping the three relays.
Double winners Zach Blume and Whit Spencer guided St. George’s to 89 points for second place in the boys race. Blume won the 1,600 and 3,200. Spencer won the discus and javelin, and placed second in the shot put.
Ritzville’s girls scored 88 to place second. Amy Fitch won the 100 hurdles and high jump for the Broncos, placed second in the 200 and finished third in the 100. Teammate Amber Sackman won the 1,600 and 3,200.
Other double winners were Mandy Walters, Sprague-Harrington, girls 400 and long jump; Molly Carlson, Selkirk, girls shot put and discus; and Jeremy Engle, Liberty, boys 200 and triple jump. Engle was also third in the 100.
Callie Palmer of Christian Heritage was second in the girls 100 and 400, and third in the 200. NWC’s Chris Clinton won the boys 400, and placed second in the 100 and 200.
The top three advance to next weekend’s State B meet at Eastern Washington University.
Freshman twins Melissa and Melanie Frostad of East Valley finished 1-2 in the girls 3,200 at the Region IV 3A meet at Prosser.
Melissa ran 11 minutes, 35.5 seconds, 1.1 seconds ahead of her sister. Melanie won the State 3A cross country title and Melissa placed fifth last November.
Hanford’s Adam Tenforde won the day’s other final, the boys 1,600, in 4:22.6. Tenforde won the regional cross country meet at Hangman Valley Golf Course last October.
The top two in each event qualify for next weekend’s Star Track in Tacoma. The regional meet concludes today.
Softball
Julie Compton’s bases-loaded triple during a five-run seventh lifted Reardan (14-7) to 10-5 victory over Liberty Bell in a District 6 2A/1A slowpitch game at Twisp.
Compton struck out four and walked none to improve to 12-6. Debbie Plummer and Kim Rinker had two RBIs apiece for the Indians, who advance to play Oroville or Cashmere at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Brewster.
Tennis
Nick Farline and Kevin Novan of Ferris defeated Mead’s Aaron Mainer and Joe Gimness (7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the oft-delayed boys doubles match for third and fourth places at the District 8 4A tournament at Central Valley.
The Region IV 4A tourney begins at noon today at CV. Greater Spokane League and Big Nine Conference players will compete in boys and girls singles and boys and girls doubles for four berths to next weekend’s state tourney in Vancouver.
