Locke Addresses School Safety Issues

From Staff

Gov. Gary Locke said Friday he will help organize “a broad cross-section” of people to find ways to make Washington public schools safer.

Locke issued the pledge along with condolences to the families and friends of Springfield, Ore., high school students killed or wounded Thursday in a shooting rampage. A fellow student was arrested.

Locke said he and Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson will convene a summit this summer to discuss school violence and search for ways to protect children and teachers.

“A broad cross-section of leaders from schools, law enforcement, businesses and community organizations must come together to address school safety issues,” Locke said.

He said he and Bergeson will announce further details at a news conference Wednesday in Seattle.
