Centennial Trail Fest Next Weekend

Friends of the Centennial Trail is now accepting registrations for next weekend’s annual Spokane River Centennial Trail Festival.

The June 6 event includes rafting, cycling, running, in-line skating, horseback riding and other events along the length of the trail. The $15 registration fee ($5 for kids 12 and under) includes a T-shirt.

The festival begins at 8 a.m. with music, contests, food and various booths at the Forestry Shelter at Riverfront Park.

Also at 8 a.m., a 6-mile river rafting trip will begin at Barker Road. Forty people will float along Class II rapids to Plante’s Ferry Park. Wetsuits are required.

Two kids’ runs around Riverfront Park will start at 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. Children 12 and under can participate. The longest run is one mile.

At 9 a.m., cyclists will begin a 22-mile ride from Riverfront Park to Mirabeau Point and back.

At the same time, those on horseback will begin a 3-hour ride from Riverside State Park north on Trail 1027 to Devil’s Toenail and along the Spokane River. Runners and walkers also will begin a 5-mile race around Riverfront Park to Mission Park and back. Award ribbons will be presented.

Other festival events include rock climbing on a portable climbing wall at Riverfront Park. The free climbing lessons are first come, first served. Children 18 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Festival organizers include Friends of the Centennial Trail, Backcountry Horsemen, Bloomsday Road Runners Club, Northwest Whitewater Association, Spokane Bicycle Club, Spokane Mountaineers and SCOPE.

Registration ends 30 minutes before each event starts. Registration on June 6 costs $5 extra.
