TV, Cable Box Makers Set Digital Standards

From Staff

Cable customers should be able to buy digital TV sets next year that will work with their set-top boxes, allowing them to see any cable show in a new format that promises razor-sharp pictures and sound.

The cable industry and TV set makers announced Monday that they have agreed on technical standards that will let digital TV sets talk to digital cable TV boxes.

Digital TV sets now on sale can’t receive any cable TV show that would be aired in the super-sharp digital format called high-definition television. But digital TV sets that go on sale next year will be able to do so because of the agreement. The standard provides for a digital connection between the TV set and the set-top box - a connection that lets the two devices talk to each other.
