How To Help Mitch Victims
Medical, religious and community groups from across the Northwest have rallied to provide relief to survivors of Hurricane Mitch in Central America.
Anyone interested in donating may do so in the following ways:
Project CARE (Central American Relief Effort) is being coordinated through The Associated Students of Whitworth College. Residents are asked to donate food, medicine and clothing at Whitworth College, Central Lutheran Church, Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, Liberty Lake Community Church as well as the Peaceful Valley, East Central, Northeast and West Central community centers.
Spokane’s St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral sponsors missionary Dr. Carole Dennison, who runs a clinic and school in LaCeiba Honduras. A fund to help her with relief efforts has been set up through a Mississippi Episcopal church that also sponsors Dennison. Donations should be designated for hurricane relief and sent to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 705 W. Rayburn at Porter, Ocean Springs, Miss., 39564.
Donations of medicine, dried foods, vitamins, personal hygiene items, clothing, shoes and blankets will be collected at all Spokane and Valley fire stations. Clothing also can be dropped off today through Nov. 13 at Broadway Elementary, 11016 E. Broadway.
Northwest Medical Teams International, Inc. is sending a team of doctors to provide care and medical supplies to Hondurans. Donations may be made through any US Bank in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Checks should be made out to Northwest Medical Teams International and designated for Hurricane Mitch relief.
Mercy Corps International, headquartered in Portland, is sending blankets, clothes and hygiene supplies to Honduras and Nicaragua. Donations can be made by calling (800) 852-2100 or by mail to Mercy Corps International, Hurricane Relief Fund, Department N, P.O. Box 9, Portland, Ore. 97207.
