WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Othello

The school district is working to keep kindergarten class sizes manageable. With an influx of 5-year-olds, the school will move 13 students from Hiawatha Elementary to Scootney Springs. Another teacher has been hired for the new class. The district now has 14 sections of kindergarten at three schools. Because of the new class, there will be about 20 students in each class.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

People enjoying the outdoors are reminded of the severe dip in night-time temperatures. While days are still moderate, after-dark temperatures are getting close to or below freezing.

GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake

The City Council has given WalMart the town’s largest retailer, the green light to place 15 more temporary storage containers of merchandise on its property. Currently, only three large containers are allowed. WalMart will pay an undetermined fee for city inspection and patrolling of the expanded area through the holiday season.

LINCOLN COUNTY Odessa

Residents were sickened by the killing of a pet horse near Lamona. Misty, a white pony belonging to the Don Walter family, was shot Oct. 31 in her pasture with a high-powered rifle and left to die. The bullet broke her back. Local authorities believe the attack was a “joy shooting” similar to recent cattle shootings near Moses Lake. Odessa residents are offering a $1,120 reward for the arrest and conviction of the shooter. If you have information on the case, call (509) 725-3501.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

The Tri-County Economic Development District has hired a new executive director, Warren Jiminez, formerly of KXLY Marketing Research Services in Spokane. The district is scheduled to go through restructuring, with a system of checks and balances between the Rural Opportunities Loan Fund and the economic Development Program.

SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park

Jason Morgan, son of Jim Morgan of Deer Park, has completed Navy basic training. The 1996 Deer Park High School graduate will attend hull technician classes in Great Lakes, Ill.

STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah

The school board decided against forming a parent advisory board. Board members felt concerned parents could already come to any public board meeting or talk to board members at any time. Bonni Haskell, who resigned from the board in June, brought up the idea. She stated that a parents group may help the district find out why such a large number of area families are choosing home schooling.

WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman

Kenneth Fridley, a member of Washington State University’s civil and environmental engineering faculty since 1994, has been named the Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award winner for 1997-1998. Fridley showed extraordinary commitment to students, adventuresome teaching methods and mastery of the latest knowledge in the field, said those who nominated him. A popular advisor and community volunteer, Fridley was also named the American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter faculty adviser of the year for 1997-1998.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

The Community Action Agency has money available to repair homes owned by low-income families that were damaged in the 1996 flood. The agency designed the program to remove health and safety problems, conditions that make the home uninhabitable and situations that limit the usable life of the structure. BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint

Tuesday’s Bonner County School District Board of Trustees meeting has been canceled because an audit to be reviewed was not going to be ready in time. The report will be released at Nov. 24’s meeting at Sandpoint High School. The Nov. 10 meeting would also have conflicted with the Idaho School Board Association Convention in Boise and Bonner County parent-teacher conferences.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

The Idaho Transportation Department will begin using an improved winter road reporting service Tuesday. The hotline will provide road condition updates for the entire state. It replaces a six number system, divided by transportation districts, from previous years. The number, (888) IDA-ROAD will allow callers to receive road information about U.S. 95, North Idaho, Southwestern Idaho, Eastern Idaho and interstates.

KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

The Lutheran Church of the Master will share a program of church history, memories, special music and a look to the future Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. as members celebrate 20 years of ministry. LATAH COUNTY Moscow

Moscow residents will join a nationwide call for freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal at noon today in Friendship Square. Mumia is a Philadelphia journalist on death row for murdering a police officer. His supporters believe his past affiliation with the Black Panther Party and other black nationalist organizations interfered with his receiving a fair trial. SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg

The Kellogg Middle School Parent, Teacher, Student Association will sponsor a presentation on HIV/AIDS by Mary Jean Tranfro of the Panhandle Health District at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kellogg Middle School band room. The presentation will include a video to help parents talk to their children about AIDS, and will include a visual model of how AIDS attacks healthy cells. Tranfro will also discuss what the global view of AIDS means to residents of the Silver Valley.

MONTANA

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Memorial Gym will open to the public by the end of next week, but the facility will no longer be used by the Lincoln County Campus of Flathead Valley Community College. FVCC will look to move the local campus to an alternate location. The buildings that house the campus were given to the county for use as a community college. A clause in the deed requires the property to be vacant for one year before being returned to the school district.
