The Kuna Kavemen handed Lakeland its first loss, stunning the Hawks 33-14 in a State A-2 quarterfinal at Corbit Field in Rathdrum.
As the Kavemen huddled in the east end zone afterward, coach Steve Despot had them repeat a chant after him: “Weiser!” They yelled the cheer five times.
Weiser defeated Kuna 21-14 in a Snake River Valley Conference game, and the two will meet in the semifinals next week at Weiser (10-0), which handled visiting St. Maries 45-6 in another opener.
Lakeland (9-1) had Weiser on the mind, too, after the Wolverines spanked the Hawks 45-24 in the semifinals last year.
The Hawks’ rematch dream died as the Kavemen (8-2) outplayed them in every aspect Saturday.
Lakeland’s loss was equally shocking as it was convincing. The Hawks defensive starters had yielded just two touchdowns going into the game.
The Hawks couldn’t stop the Kavemen when it counted most. And Kuna’s offensive ball control ultimately forced Lakeland’s offense to do what it’s not most comfortable doing - pass.
