Spend nine days touring England with other teens from around the country. Enter the Young Columbus essay contest sponsored by the Newspapers in Education program of The Spokesman-Review and react magazine. Students ages 12 to 18 are eligible to enter if they live in The Spokesman-Review home delivery area. All you have to do is look through the the newspaper (or online at www.spokane.net) and find someone who has made a difference in society. Collect the article or series of articles and write a one-page summary of this person’s positive contributions. Then write a 200-word fictitious letter to this person explaining how they inspired you to get involved in your community or have given you a better understanding of the importance of community involvement. Complete entry forms are available by calling 459-5071 or (800) 338-8801, ext. 5071. Deadline for entries is Nov. 30.

A benefit concert featuring 15 bands, including Champion Birdwatchers, Looking Jonny?, Buddy Ruckus and farfromburnin’, among others, will be held Saturday from noon to midnight at Club Christo, 518 W. Third. Admission is $10. All proceeds will go to the family of Malinda Clark, a Ferris sophomore who recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor.
