Lind

Residents recently raised $70,000 to purchase a new ambulance for the Lind Ambulance Crew. Specially designed to fit into the ambulance garage, it is scheduled to arrive this week from North Carolina.

Checks have been cut by the state Department of Revenue for local sales tax collected in May and June. The city collected $8,621.67 in the .05 percent basic sales tax, and $8,592.46 was collected on the .05 percent optional tax. Local sales taxes so far this year add up to $72,829.97. The city also received $902.27 in hotel/motel taxes.

Local schoolchildren are getting a leg up on their geography studies. Volunteers from the Telephone Pioneers of America painted a giant United States map on the Warden School sidewalk. Students can play beanbag games on the 32-by-21-foot mural and learn the states at the same time. Other schools wishing to have a map painted for them can call (509) 762-5112.

In a sendup of recent elections, Jack Praetorius stumped to be elected “wildlife permissioner.” His campaign sign, nailed to a giant tree stump in the back of his truck. “Elect me and things will really get wild,” the sign vowed. Praetorius was skunked at the polls for any and all positions available, but thanks Tony Williams and Chip Hunt for their nomination.

Four girls have been knocking on doors, fraudulently asking for money for the First Baptist Church’s Awana Club. Church officials say the girls do not represent the church and Awana is not funded by door-to-door donations. The family of Pier Bridges will move into their new home today, marking the dedication of Habitat for Humanity’s 58th local home. The house, at 2121 E. Boone, will be dedicated at 5 p.m. All volunteers are invited. As usual, the Spokane Food Bank will stock the shelves for the family.

Local thespian and vocalist Robyn Pruitt-Hamm recently took the stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City. A 1997 Colville graduate, she is part of the 40-member Westminster College women’s choir. The choir performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a sold-out performance. Pruitt-Hamm is a veteran of many Woodland Theater productions.

The city Parks and Recreation Department is planning a snow camping trip Nov. 21-22. Campers will learn how to build a snow cave and use snow shoes. The Kootenai Heritage Council will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Ponderosa Room of Libby City Hall to gather information on the physical requirements of the proposed cultural arts center. An architect will conduct the initial design proposal of the meeting and will record all suggestions from the community in this, the first of several community meetings planned. A floor plan of the proposed facility will then be brought back to the community for further input and modification.
