County commissioners have rejected all three proposals from persons seeking the county’s public defender contract. County Prosecuting Attorney David Sandhaus, who was defeated in the September primary, and current public defenders Dennis Morgan and Paul J. Szott were the bidders. There is no plan now to ask for more proposals.

Ferry County

The annual junior-senior high food drive is in full swing. Members of the Republic High School Honor Society are in charge of the drive and will weigh and record donations. The five students bringing in the most food by Friday will win a free lunch. To donate, contact the school.

High school students taking Running Start classes and adults pursuing two-year degrees are filling all available desks at Big Bend Community College’s branch campus. Nursing, computers and an electrician’s apprentice program are especially popular.

Lincoln County

Area food banks will have fresh apples on hand thanks to local Farm Service Agency workers Arlou Ives and Sally Simpson. The duo, joined by friends and family, gleaned Yakima area orchards in October. In three outings, the group picked 20,000 pounds of apples for charity.

Pend Oreille County

Diamond Lake

The validity of a petition to fix the level of Diamond Lake is being questioned. Three residents who signed the petition, circulated by property owner Bob Morris, have asked that their names be stricken from the document. Because a petition for action such as this needs signatures from at least 10 affected property owners, the petition could be negated. A hearing to discuss dismissing the petition has been set for Dec. 3.

The community is invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cheney Community Library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the library, 610 First.

Stevens County

Kettle Falls

The Kettle Falls Food Bank is seeking donations. Not only are turkeys, cranberries and pumpkin pie needed for 250 Thanksgiving gift boxes, but general foodstuffs also are being sought to fill shelves before the snow flies. Residents are being urged to adopt a family through the food bank to provide the family with a holiday dinner. The food bank has served an average of 186 families per month this year.

A community forum on how last week’s passage of an anti-affirmative-action initiative may affect Washington State University is set for today at 5 p.m. in WSU’s Compton Union Building, Rooms 212-216. The University of Idaho Student Union will hold its third swing dance Friday in the SUB Ballroom. Swing Nights begin at 7:30 p.m. with beginner and new dance step instruction offered by Erin Walker, a UI graduate student in music. At 8 p.m., local band Not Too Shabby will be featured. The event also will include a dance and costume contest. Special guest Bernard Bobb, a World War II veteran and Pullman resident, will provide commentary on the Big Band era and its fashions, dances, music and postwar lifestyle. The fourth-annual Festival of Trees is set for Dec. 4 and 5 in Memorial Gym. Display forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office and at St. John’s Hospital. Public viewing of the trees will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 4 and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children under age 12.
