Pross Leaves Hat In Ring For 2000 Race

Maverick Democrat Gordon Allen Pross says the 40,000 votes he received in the general election have persuaded him to take another run at the 4th Congressional District seat two years from now.

“I’m just getting started,” he said Wednesday. “This is the foundation for the bridge we’re building in 2000.”

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., won re-election to a third term on Nov. 3 with 69 percent of the vote. Pross received 24 percent and Reform Party candidate Peggy McKerlie of Wenatchee got 7 percent.

But Pross spent only $450 on the race, mostly on gasoline for his 1979 Thunderbird while traveling the 10-county central Washington district, which stretches from the Canadian border to the Columbia River.

He considers 40,000 votes without the aid of signs, media advertising or the support of the national Democratic Party an accomplishment.

Hastings spent about $456,000 on the race and received nearly 113,000 votes.
