Ten years ago: Israeli President Chaim Herzog formally asked Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir to form a new government. U.S. officials said Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev would visit the United States the following month.

Five years ago: Residents of Puerto Rico voted in a plebiscite to maintain the island’s existing U.S. commonwealth status, derailing the efforts of those favoring statehood.

One year ago: Sara Lister, assistant secretary of the Army for manpower and reserve affairs, resigned in the wake of political pressure after she called Marines “extremists” and made fun of their uniforms.
