Mission Fair At Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is embarking on a year-long concentrated effort to form partnerships with 10 community service organizations.

The effort begins with a mission fair Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and continuing from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 810 S. Sullivan Road.

Representatives from each organization will be on hand to provide information on the services they provide and how they can work with church members. The representatives will also participate in the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday.

The effort grew out of a proposal by the church’s Sunday school superintendent to have the Sunday school classes participate in a social service project, coupled with a desire to raise awareness about the organizations, says Pastor Lothar Pitz.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” says Pitz. “I wish I had thought of it myself.

“There is a service component in the Christian faith,” says Pitz, and he sees the mission effort as a dramatic way to demonstrate that fact.

Each Sunday school class and adult education class will be paired with one of the organizations for a year. The classes will visit the organizations, volunteer their time and donate needed items such as food, diapers and toiletry items.

Participating organizations are: The Spokane Valley Center, Lutheran Social Services, the Union Gospel Mission, Anna Ogden Hall, Crosswalk, the Good Samaritan Retirement Center, Life Services of Spokane, Hospice of Spokane, Valley Meals on Wheels and the Ross Pointe Retirement Community.

Bunko party at Zion Lutheran

Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye, will host a bunko party from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Bunko is a family-oriented dice game.

Refreshments will be served. A handmade afghan and a Beanie Baby will be raffled off for 50 cents per ticket or 12 for $5.

The cost is $15 per person at the door, which includes 30 games and one raffle ticket. Proceeds will be used to help send church youth to a retreat in June 1999.

The Logos youth program will also be selling gift baskets between the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services Sunday.

English classes at Pines Baptist

Pines Baptist church, 714 S. Pines Road, has resumed its conversational English and English-as-a-second-language classes.

The classes run from 7 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday. There is no charge and no registration is required. The classes run through the school year.

Churches host holiday bazaars

Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, and Christ Lutheran church, 13009 E. Broadway, will both have holiday bazaars today.

Millwood Presbyterian’s bazaar will run from from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hours at Christ Lutheran are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The events will feature holiday decorations, quilts and holiday gifts.
