Adams County Ritzville
The Ritzville High School FFA soils judging team got down and dirty at the state competition recently. Vying for a trip to the national tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla., the team bested 25 other agriculture teams for top honors. Local FFA students also earned a trip to nationals in the ag issues competition.
Ferry County Republic
With the regular buck season over, deer hunters here found hunting favorable. Some locals hunters never left their back porch. A local herd of tame mule deer was spotted all over town on closing day. Its leader, a four-point buck, was bagged earlier in the season. A spike and four does are still making themselves at home in Republic.
Grant County Ephrata
Hoping to take advantage of low interest rates, the city is pushing for a new swimming pool. City Manager Jim Cherf said the $1 million project could be completed without asking voters for a bond. The city has put aside $40,000 each year for planning for pool construction, and with current interest rates, only needs another $40,000 to proceed with plans.
Lincoln County Wilbur
Although the stadium light project is finished at the local high school, money to defray costs is always needed. The Colville Confederated Tribes presented the school district with a $4,000 donation toward the lighting project. Several tribal members attend the Wilbur school. Junior high and high school students from Keller, in Ferry County, are bussed to class there daily.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Enter an essay contest and win a horse. Jessica Mott and Chrystal Ziesmer can tell you it’s not a dream. The girls won a special essay contest at the county fair in August. J.D. Lambert of Metaline Falls decided to give two Arabian horses away to deserving kids because he “had too many horses,” and couldn’t spend enough time with them. The girls wrote about why they’d like the responsibility of owning an Arabian horse.
Spokane County Colbert
The Society of American Foresters recently announced its new vice president as Frederick W. Ebel of Colbert. Ebel is president of Ebel and Associates and former regional timberlands manager for WTD Industries. Ebel’s term begins Jan. 1.
Stevens County Barstow
Fire Chief Victor Daily says the new Barstow Fire Station is officially finished. To celebrate, local families are invited to an open house. Children can pose for pictures on the fire engine and fire safety information will be available at the Sunday event. The Barstow Fire Station is located north of Kettle Falls on Highway 395 next to the Kettle River Grange.
Whitman County Palouse
The Palouse Cove housing for seniors will hold open house tours Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m. The 11-unit housing complex is situated in the South Hill neighborhood of Palouse.

Benewah County St. Maries
The Benewah County sheriff’s office recently shipped 490 pounds of marijuana to the state criminal investigations bureau in Coeur d’Alene to be destroyed. The marijuana, collected from more than a dozen raids since last spring, was loaded onto the bed of a pickup after being cut, bagged and boxed by county evidence officers.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The Bonner Business Center recycling bay will present a guest workshop by Bob Kirby on Thursday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Kirby will answer questions regarding mold making, fusing glass and other technical issues related to recycled glass. He will also discuss construction uses for recycled glass. Boundary County Bonners Ferry A free workshop for the elderly is being held Tuesday at the Kootenai River Inn. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the workshop beginning at 9 a.m. The workshop is designed to show how senior citizens can improve their lives through technology. Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Entry deadline for the eighth annual downtown Christmas parade is Nov. 20. The theme for the Nov. 27 parade is “Holiday Memories.” Space is limited to 35 entries, and they will be judged with winners receiving cash and plaques. Latah County Moscow
The city of Moscow is seeking applicants for the following commissions: arts, health and environment, historical preservation, parks and recreation, planning and zoning, technical code review and transportation. Shoshone County Wallace
An undisclosed amount of narcotics was stolen Tuesday from the pharmacy at Tabor’s Modern Drug in Wallace. The theft occurred during the time the pharmacists were at lunch. The drug stolen was the painkiller Hydrocodone.
