Instant Gun Check

Shooting

All new firearms purchases - rifles and shotguns, as well as handguns - will require an instant background check effective Nov. 30.

The National Instant Check System (NICS), which is the second phase of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act passed by Congress in 1993, will process background checks on all retail gun sales beginning Dec. 1.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials say the “instant” criminal background check are expected to take anywhere from three minutes to three days.
