After discovering a baggie of marijuana near the bus garage, Ritzville School District officials called in the big guns. K-9 officer Imo sniffed school halls and lockers in a recent sweep for illicit drugs. Undersheriff Jay Wiese, Imo’s handler, said no drugs were found.

People wishing to get involved in public service may apply for Curlew mosquito control commissioner. The five appointed commissioners, who serve without pay, meet nine times each year to detail mosquito prevention goals, set policies, prepare budgets and hire employees. Pacific Rim Ethanol has proposed a $70 million ethanol plant three miles east of town. The plant would employ up to 60 people and would use 4 million bushels of local wheat and 15 million bushels of local corn to manufacture the fuel. The company hopes to start construction next April, with fuel production getting under way by April 2000.

Toddler Zachary Zagelow is sitting up, brushing his teeth and watching television after a heart/lung transplant last week, his grandparents said. Larry and June Zagelow consider their grandson lucky because he was on a transplant list only a few weeks before a donor was found. Zachary and his parents Mike and Gina Zagelow will live close to Stanford University Medical Center for several months before they can return home to Spokane.

Newport
A bankrupt subcontractor for insurance companies has left Newport Community Hospital with a $300,000 unpaid bill. HealthLink was affiliated with Northside Medical Services Organization and Northside Physicians Hospital Network. The hospital may end up losing as much as $450,000 and may have to dip into reserves to cover its losses. It has joined a class action against the insurance carriers to try to recoup its losses.

Micki Harnois, a longtime resident of the Fairfield area, has been named to the Citizens Advisory Committee for Transportation. Harnois is a graduate student in urban and regional planning at Eastern Washington University. Other new committee members are Karen Barniol, Richard Bryant, David Buxton, Peter Higgins, Daniel Lambert, Shirley Meyer and Joe Tortorelli. The committee advises the Spokane Regional Transportation Council.

Charities in the Colville area don’t need to wish on a star for funds - they look to the moon. Moonglow Productions, a local club dedicated to “serving the community and having fun doing it,” has donated 2,000 pounds of food to local food banks this year.

Panhandle Animal Shelter Thrift Shoppe recently was relocated to 506 Oak St. next to Foster’s Crossing. The new location has an additional 4,000 square feet of floor space. The shop provides one-third of the operating funds for the animal shelter.
