At least five people reported vandalism by paint-ball bandits Nov.7. Two juveniles have admitted their guilt to the Sheriff’s Department. Their parents promised to take care of the situation.
FERRY COUNTY Republic
After eight years of scrimping and saving, the Friends of the Republic Library organization is seeing results. The group has raised more than $91,000 to expand the library. E&J Construction is working on the addition. New shelves, tables, and of course, more books are also on the wish list.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
Seventy jobs will be lost when Basic American Foods moves its dehydrated bean production unit. Hoping to reduce costs, the company will consolidate local bean production with that of its Plover, Wis., plant. Plant manager Brian Meiners denies the layoff has a connection with the strike of 85 Sunspiced workers. BAF and Sunspiced share some facilities and management.
LINCOLN COUNTY Wilbur
The New Life Center, a nondenominational church, is sponsoring a free showing of the Billy Graham film “The Ride.” The film, starring Michael Bien, will be presented at the Sherman Church on Sherman Road, on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Cusick
The Pend Oreille County Fair may be a thing of the past if the state doesn’t reinstate funding, says local chairman Jim Mathis. The fair receives $26,000 in state funding annually, most of it from horse racing revenues. Because betting on the ponies has been declining, so have funds. Mathis says Pend Oreille County will put on “some kind of fair” next year, even without state funds. Local contributions total about $9,000 of the fair’s budget.
SPOKANE COUNTY Spokane
A group of 11 area teachers were among the 130,000 instructors nationwide chosen to be listed in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” Honored teachers are: Kirk Schmick, Chattaroy Elementary School; Gary Axtell, Sharon Heydet, Janice Pittz and Lita Tabish, Deer Park High School; Roberta Cossey, Deer Park Middle School; William Kemp, Allen Martin, Marvin Sather and Chris Wren, Riverside High School; and Molly Cubbage, Riverside Middle School.
STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah
Hoping to eliminate a dangerous intersection, the county Public Works Department is studying options for the Orin-Rice and Valley-Westside roads. With grant money in hand for the project, the county is hoping to close sections of both roads and build a new intersection. The Orin-Rice Road has a steep grade, which makes the intersection dangerous during winter.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
Washington State University’s Opera Workshop plans “An Evening of Musical Theatre,” tonight at 8 in the Bryan Hall Auditorium. The free program will include scenes from four shows performed by WSU students, including “Nine,” “The Secret Garden,” “Into the Woods,” and “Company.” Accompanists will be Michelle Mielke and Hsiao-ling Lo.

Panhandle Health District will sponsor a food handling safety class at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Gordon B. Leuty Building. BONNER COUNTY Priest River
The grand opening for the new Blue Lake Grange Hall is at 6 p.m. Saturday. The previous building was destroyed in a January 1997 fire. The new hall is on the same site as the old one, and is owned by Bonner County and managed by the Blue Lake Community Club. The Blue Lake building will be available for a variety of activities.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The Idaho Fish and Game check station in Boundary County is at John Alt’s meat shop on County Road 22 in Paradise Valley. Hunters and fishermen with or without game are asked to stop at the check station.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
Nearly 250 Panhandle high school journalism students will be at North Idaho College today for The Idaho Spokesman-Review’s second annual High School Journalism Workshop. The day-long workshop, co-sponsored by Coeur d’Alene Nissan-Subaru and Super 1 Foods, and hosted by the NIC journalism department, includes a writing competition and workshop sessions for writers and photographers.

The Eastside Marketplace is holding a food drive through Dec. 18 to benefit the Moscow Food Bank. Nonperishable food items can be turned in with merchants or at the drop-off station in the front entry. Those who donate a can of food will be eligible to win a $100 gift certificate to any Eastside Marketplace merchant.

Shoshone Medical Center voted Nov. 12 to stick with their decision to end a management agreement with Med Management and with hospital chief executive officer Bob Morasko. The hospital will begin a search for new management. Morasko will remain with the hospital during the search to ensure a smooth transition and allow him to complete projects.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby
The Kootenai and Sanders County Job Service Centers are operating under one manager due to declining budgets. The centers will be managed by Mike Bissell, who, prior to the consolidation, managed just the Kootenai Office in Libby. The Flathead and Lake County centers have also been consolidated and will be managed by Mike Shoquist of the Lake County Center in Polson.
