WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

Despite turning down all three public defender proposals in a morning meeting, including one from current public defenders Dennis Morgan and Paul Szott, county commissioners had a change of heart in the afternoon and contracted with the two for another five years. Morgan and Szott will be paid $237,000 per year, with Steve Felice and John Strohmaier providing back-up. David Sandhaus, the county prosecutor recently defeated at the polls, was one of the other two bidders.

Ferry County Republic

Local senior citizens are in need of a helping hand now and then, especially in the winter months, Republic’s Volunteer Chore Service says.

Volunteers are needed to help seniors run errands and do light housekeeping or yard work. The service will pay mileage. If interested, contact VCS at (509) 684-5671.

Grant County Royal City

Dam removal to save salmon habitat will be discussed at the Thursday meeting of the City Council. Guest speaker Robert Lonn will present “If Our Dams are Removed … Then What?” at 7 p.m.

Lonn is a planner with the Northwest Council of Governments.

Lincoln County Wilbur

Armed with new laptop computers, Wilbur police officers will be spending more time on the streets. The two laptops were funded by a $3,750 federal grant and $1,274 from the city.

The goal is to get the officers out of the office. They can write reports while performing traffic duty in their cars.

Pend Oreille County Usk

Those interested in the county’s economic development are invited to a meeting Thursday. The Economic Development Citizens Advisory Council will discuss revising the Economic Development Council’s plan and goals.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Ione Senior Citizen Center.

Spokane County Medical Lake

The Inland Northwest Blood Center will have a blood drive at Medical Lake High School from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 25. Donors should check in at the old gym on the west side of the high school. All blood collected will be used for Medical Lake residents.

Stevens County Onion Creek

One person can make a big difference. Marcy Camargo, a mother of three young children, is a living example. Camargo volunteered more than 300 hours of her time to the Onion Creek School. Camargo has chaperoned field trips, done general office work, helps as a teacher’s aide and monitors recess.

Whitman County Pullman

Washington State University student Gennia Wellington, a criminal justice and sociology major, has received WSU’s Multicultural Student Services Undergraduate Student of the Year award for her mentoring and student advocacy.

Rosannette Hernandez Rimando, an English and secondary education major, received the Multicultural Scholar Award for academic achievement and the Multicultural Leadership Award from the Council of Multicultural Student Presidents.

Ellen Lin, a doctoral student in counseling psychology, received the Multicultural Student Services Graduate Student of the Year award for her continued support of 11 WSU students of color.

Faculty member Colin Beckles, a member of WSU’s Department of Comparative American Cultures, received the Faculty Member of the Year Award for his commitment to teaching, students and multicultural issues at WSU.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

The Lakeside High School junior class is sponsoring a family dinner and dance at the school gym Nov. 22. The dinner will begin at 5 p.m., with the dance from 6-8 p.m. The Kelly Hughes Band will provide the music.

Dinner costs $3 per person, $5 per couple and $10 per family. The dance costs $5 per person, $8 per couple or $12 per family.

Bonner County Sandpoint

Following two public meetings, the Memorial Field committee has decided to replace the bleachers along the third base line with uncovered seating, and to include a roof over part of the new seating. The new seating will hold 140 people instead of the original 350. No date has been set for the destruction of the old bleachers.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Bonners Ferry Ranger District has now switched to its winter hours. The district office is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Christmas tree permits are available for $3. Firewood permits also are available.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Lookout Pass Ski Area, Parkside Bistro & Pub and Pyramid Ales will host a Ski and Board Party 6-10 p.m. Thursday at Parkside Bistro & Pub in Coeur d’Alene. Area residents will be able to preview details of the new 1,100 foot long half pipe in Buzzard’s Valley, more than 50 acres of new ski and board terrain. Del Sanborn of Lookout will be on hand to discuss plans for the half pipe, which will be one of the world’s longest.

Latah County Troy

The Troy Lion’s Club is having an American Red Cross blood drive Thursday afternoon at the Troy Lions Hall on Main Street.

To donate blood Thursday between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m., a person must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old. To schedule an appointment, call Marie Vogel at (208) 835-2021.

Shoshone County Mullan

A new fort on the playground of Mullan Elementary has been constructed by parent volunteers. The fort was built with $1,000 grants from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Education Foundation and the North Idaho Community Foundation. The volunteers tore down the old playground equipment and constructed the fort, with plans of installing a slide and swings in the spring. Lucky Friday Mine also made a donation of a ladder and cargo net for the structure.

Lincoln County Libby

Lincoln County Libraries in Libby, Troy and Eureka have scheduled events in recognition of Book Week Nov. 16-24. The Libby Library will host “Three Persons: A Trapper’s Life with the Blackfeet” Thursday at 7 p.m. Story time for preschoolers will be Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. in Libby, the first and third Thursdays at 11:45 a.m. in Troy, and the same days at 11 a.m. in Eureka. Youth activities will be in Libby on Wednesday 3:30-4:30 p.m.
