ADAMS COUNTY

Othello

With passage of state Referendum 49 on highway funding, local residents are hoping to say goodbye to “killer corner” where state Highway 17 and state Highway 26 meet. A proposed $7.4 million overpass would take Highway 17 over Highway 26 a few miles southeast of Othello.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Local residents are working to ensure that all children have warm coats for winter. The annual Coats for Kids drive is under way, and people with coats they no longer need are urged to take them to Anderson’s Grocery.

GRANT COUNTY

Ephrata

County coffers are richer as the U.S. Department of Energy has made its annual payment in lieu of taxes. The $515,323 is for county lands that are part of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

LINCOLN COUNTY

Davenport

Although concerned parents have asked for drug testing of student-athletes, they say they are pleased with Davenport School District Superintendent Jim Howard’s plan to identify the drug problem before trying to fight it. Students, parents, teachers and social service agencies will discuss the drug problem in a series of meetings, and a report on findings will be due in February.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Diamond Lake

Declaring themselves the “lead agency” in the local fight against Eurasian milfoil, county commissioners have pledged to apply for a $14,000 state grant. Eurasian milfoil is a noxious weed that chokes lakes and rivers. The grant would pay for locating milfoil infestations, informing the public of outbreaks and funding a portion of the weed’s removal.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Spokane

The Spokane County Amateur Radio Emergency Service and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service will meet at 7:15 p.m. today at Spokane County Fire Station No. 92 at Farwell Road and Market Street in Mead. Participants will discuss and practice handling radio traffic and how to handle any emergencies in connection with Y2K, the year 2000 computer bug. STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

Plans are in the works to add nine holes to the Colville Elks Golf Course. A group called Friends of Colville Golf hopes to succeed where other expansion-minded groups have failed. The group has targeted a water-hazard-dotted 140-acre parcel of land southeast of the existing golf course. An architect has been working on a master plan and design.

WHITMAN COUNTY

Pullman

Pullman Transit will hold an open house Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 775 N.W. Guy. The public may visit the remodeled, enlarged building, which will accommodate Pullman Transit’s 30-plus employees.

IDAHO

BENEWAH COUNTY

St. Maries

St. Maries Church of the Nazarene is accepting donations of bedding, clothing, medical supplies, food, household items, hand tools and money for victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras. Church member Dana Benscoter is a missionary in Honduras.

Contributions can be dropped off at Junction Drive Inn, NAPA Auto Parts and the church until Tuesday. Donations are tax-deductible, and donors will receive a receipt upon request. For more information, call (208) 245-4594.

Sandpoint

Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold public hearings Dec. 3 to consider appeals relating to the installation of cellular communications towers. Appeals from Cocolalla resident Pete Mulbarger and Western Wireless will be considered at 2 p.m. in the Sandpoint Community Hall. A hearing on Schweitzer Mountain Resort and Cellular One’s conditional use permit will be at 8:30 p.m. in the Bonner County Courthouse.

Bonners Ferry

Moscow

The Palouse Folklore Society is planning a benefit dance for Moscow arts advocate Peter Basoa, a founding member of the folklore group who suffered a stroke late last month. The dance will be Saturday at the Moscow Community Center. Dance instructions will begin at 7:30 p.m., and the dance will follow from 8 p.m to 11 p.m.
