The Rocky Mountain population of greater sandhill cranes continue to do well, according to a recent aerial survey of fall staging areas in five states.

The counts were conducted by state agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and volunteers.

This year’s total of 18,202 cranes was the highest since 19,297 were counted in 1992. Idaho is home to more than 44 percent of the Rocky Mountain sandhill crane population, which is shared by Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.
