Hunting

The need for continuing hunter education for adults is a key component in recommendations released recently by Montana’s Hunter Behavior Advisory Council.

The 16-member council suggested the state Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department create a voluntary continuing hunter education program for adults, along with a mandatory hunter education course for convicted violators of fish and game laws.

To help polish hunter behavior, the council recommends rewards - such as “preference points” in special drawings or some enhanced hunting opportunity - for successfully completing a hunter education program.

Washington has offered such incentives in a voluntary Advanced Hunter Education Program.

The panel also calls for simplified, “user-friendly” hunting regulations that may help hunters avoid inadvertent violations, more stringent fines for violators, and sentencing guidelines for judges to apply against violators.
