Adams County Ritzville
Those determined to keep those added holiday pounds at bay are welcome to the annual “Turkey Trot” event. Participants will take a brisk walk on the Ritzville Path. Those interested in staying slim, or who may want to build up an appetite, are asked to gather at the Ritz Theater at 8:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning.
Ferry County Republic
Members of the local CYM youth group are filling shoe boxes with special presents for needy kids worldwide. Called “Operation Christmas Child,” kids all over the nation fill shoe boxes with toys and necessities such as soap, combs and gloves for kids in war-torn nations. Last year, the group sent 20 gift boxes and hopes to have more this year.
Grant County Ephrata
No occupancy date has been set for the Grant County Satellite Jail, which is still under construction. Because the building is a prototype, details on security systems have put the project behind schedule. The current holdup is a smoke-control alarm panel from Telect of Spokane. Although the panel is expected this week, no new occupancy date will be set. The county had hoped inmates housed in a downtown Ephrata tent jail would be in the new jail before winter.
Lincoln County Almira
An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the Grand Coulee Dam Credit Union branch here Nov. 12. The culprit - described at 5-feet-9-inches tall, thin with dark hair, possibly Hispanic or Native American - and his driver are still at large. The suspect wore a ski mask and carried a weapon which authorities think was a shotgun. The two fled the scene in a tan, compact hatchback car. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
Pend Oreille County Metaline Falls
Mark your calendar for Dec. 5 and 6 when the annual “Deck the Falls” celebration is scheduled to debut. The event features a food fair with free sampling of treats. Marine Pfc. Jonathan C. Collier, son of Jeffrey and Giovanna Collier of Colbert, recently completed the Marine Corps Field Wireman Course at the Marine Corps Communications Electronics School in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Stevens County Loon Lake
Hoping to continue restoration of the Old Schoolhouse, residents are planning a holiday fund-raiser. The Kris Kringle Markt (German for market), set to open Nov. 28, will feature hand-made items, holiday decorations and goodies for sale. Proceeds will go toward Old Schoolhouse renovations. The building, built in 1929 and used until 1992, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Whitman County Pullman
Pullman Transit will be reducing bus service for Thanksgiving break. Between today and Wednesday, the A,J, and I routes will run from 6:50 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. The A route will also serve the North Campus Heights and Campus Commons areas on these days. E route will run from 7:20 to 8:50 a.m. only. Dial-a-ride and office hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. All “Trippers,” will run on the regular schedule except on Wednesday to coincide with early school release. Bonner County Sandpoint
The Sandpoint City Council is seeking to fill a vacancy after the resignation of Gloria Schauwecker. A position also is open on the city’s planning commission. Council candidates must be at least 18 years of age, registered to vote and a city resident for at least 30 days. Planning commission candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have lived in Sandpoint for at least two years.
