The Chamber of Commerce is planning “Country Holiday” festivities Friday and Saturday, including a model train show, teddy bear exhibit, museum tours, art fair, quilt show and food. For a can of food, children can view “Air Bud” at the Ritz Theater, then have their picture taken with Santa at Nauditt’s Mini Mall.

Those who face a solitary Thanksgiving holiday are invited to the annual turkey feast at the Hitch-n-Post. Set for Thanksgiving day, the meal includes all the trimmings, such as pumpkin pie and a friendly face. Dinner is served at 1 p.m. Anyone wishing to lend a hand with the cost, cooking or serving of the meal is invited to call (509) 775-2221.

Dangerous dogs will now take a bite out of their owners’ wallets. The City Council adopted an ordinance on dangerous and potentially dangerous animals - those who have attacked humans or have killed a domestic animal. The dogs’ owners will have to pay a $250 registration fee and normal licensing fees. Annual license renewal is $200. The animals must be confined away from children and “Beware of Dog” signs must be clearly displayed.

Wilbur

The Wilbur Emergency Fund, which helps families in need with groceries, energy bills, medicine and rent throughout the year, needs a jump-start. Gale Brougher, spokesman for the fund, says roughly $4,000 is needed to help friends and neighbors through the winter this year. Donations can be made at local branches of The Wheatland Bank or Key Bank.

Pend Oreille County

Santa Claus will make the Ione Senior Center on Houghton Street his first stop of the season Saturday. Festivities run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include treats and pictures.

Spokane County

Kettle Falls

Those who want to see their names in lights are invited to auditions for “Brigadoon.” Produced by The Woodland’s Theater, tryouts will be Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at Woodland’s Theater. Scripts are available at Go West Books in Chewelah, the Kettle Falls Pharmacy and the Book Depot in Colville. The marquee should shine some time in March.

The staff of Neill Public Library will take an extended Thanksgiving holiday this year. The library will close at 6 p.m. today and reopen Saturday at 10 a.m.

The annual “Gingerbread House on Peppermint Street” craft show will be Dec. 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge. Before this year, local crafters had two separate craft shows, the Peppermint Street and Gingerbread House shows. For information contact Linda Whitehead at (208) 245-2464.

Absentee ballots for the Dec. 8 school district separation election are available at the Bonner County Clerk’s office in the main courthouse building. The office is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. An application to request an absentee ballot must be filed with the County Clerk.

The Coeur d’Alene Chapter of the American Association of University Women is awarding a $500 continuing education scholarship for the 1999 spring term to a resident of Kootenai County who holds a four-year degree. Applications for the scholarship are available at the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls Chambers of Commerce, Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Lakeland school district offices, local libraries, the Women’s Center, North Idaho College’s financial aid office, Lewis and Clark State College and the University of Idaho Graduate Center. Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute is losing longtime watershed program coordinator Adam Thornbrough. Thornbrough, who is leaving the Palouse for the East Coast, devoted six years to helping clean up and improve the 19-mile Paradise Creek watershed. He wrote grants, trained volunteers and worked tirelessly to restore stream quality to the small creek, which runs through Moscow.

Ken Smith, owner of Dave Smith Motors, was awarded the 1998 Leaders of Distinction award by Pontiac-GMC Division of General Motors. The award is given yearly to 5 percent of more than 3,600 Pontiac and GMC dealers who show outstanding dealer performance in business areas including sales, customer satisfaction and profitability.

A community Thanksgiving dinner will be served at the Libby Senior Citizens’ Center 1-3 p.m. Thursday. Volunteers are needed for jobs including peeling potatoes and making gravy.
