Wakefield, Olson Lead Pirates’ Win

A hot hand and persistency carried the Whitworth College women to an 80-59 non-league basketball victory over Claremont College Wednesday night.

Jamie Wakefield had the hot hand. Star Olson was persistent.

The sophomores divided 42 points equally for the young Pirates (1-1), who broke open a tight game in the second half. The score was tied at 31 at the intermission.

Wakefield hit 10 of 11 shots from the field, including her only 3-pointer, in compiling 21 points.

Olson, converted from small forward to shooting guard this season, unloaded 20 shots to get eight to fall, and was 2 of 8 from 3-point range and 3 of 5 in free throws, for her 21.

Center Darcy Burton was the Athenas’ mainstay, scoring 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds as Claremont had a 42-35 margin on the boards.

Reserve Kay Dolan also was in double figures with 11 points.

Myra Slwooko had six rebounds and Wakefield and Emily Stuenkel five each for Whitworth.
