The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department has canceled a planned coastal razor clam season scheduled to begin in October.

Levels of a natural toxin called demoic acid have risen to an unsafe level in the clams, the department said. The acid can make people ill if they eat the clams.

Agents are monitoring acid levels and the department will set new dates for digging when it is safe.
