WSU Edges Cal

Jennifer Stinson pounded down 23 kills Sunday as Washington State University pulled out a five-set volleyball victory over the University of California at Berkeley, Calif.

The Cougars downed the Golden Bears 15-5, 14-16, 9-15, 15-5, 15-9 to improve their season record to 5-6 and their Pacific-10 Conference mark to 2-3. Cal, the conference cellar-dweller, skidded to 3-11, 0-6.

Stinson hit .333 and teammate Wendy Rouse, who had 12 kills and hit .370, helped WSU post a .301 attacking percentage. Stinson also contributed a block and six block assists.

Cal’s attacking percentage was a meek .131, thanks to 37 errors. WSU committed only 14 hitting errors.

Men’s soccer

Mike Thompson scored a rebound goal after 2 minutes, 23 seconds of play and Gonzaga University made it stand up for a 1-0 victory at University of Portland in their West Coast Conference opener.

The victorious Bulldogs improved their overall record to 6-3-2. The Pilots, who lost their first WCC opening game in 11 years, are 5-3-1, 0-1-0. Gonzaga goalkeeper Josh Fouts made nine saves.

Ben Wickert scored twice as Whitworth College rebounded from Saturday’s overtime loss to Linfield, to stun Willamette University’s Northwest Conference leaders 4-1 at Whitworth.

Wickert broke the ice with his first goal after 17 minutes of play and made the score 3-1 after 8 minutes of the second half. Jace Jones and Aaron Grubb also scored for the Pirates (5-5, 3-5). The Bearcats stand at 8-3, 6-2.

Women’s soccer

Reserve forward Heather Olson nailed her fourth game-winning goal of the season 7 minutes into the first overtime period to give Montana (7-3-1) a 3-2 non-conference victory over Washington State (2-6-2) at Pullman.

WSU forced the overtime when sophomore Deka DeWitt scored her second goal of the match with just 3 minutes remaining in regulation.

Willamette (10-0-2, 8-0) remained unbeaten for the season with a 2-1 Northwest Conference road victory at Whitworth (4-7, 3-5).

Jennifer Dunford, a junior from Spokane, headed in a free kick from Heidi Bohnett to give Whitworth its only goal after 15 minutes of the second half. Willamette’s Araya Parrish countered with the game-winner from 10 meters out.
