Celebrating 100 years of fellowship, the Good Hope Lutheran Church of Lind has invited the public to dinner. The meal at 6:30 p.m. Saturday will feature baron of beef catered by Diane Gering. Established in 1898, the church was originally based on German heritage and language. It made the switch to all-English services in 1941.

Three youngsters who spent their summer competitively swimming were recently honored by their coach at a banquet. Matthew and Mikey Slagle, 7 and 5 years old, and Ned Fischer, 6, hit the road to Colville, an hour’s drive each way, to participate in the Sharks Swim Club. As if all that driving wasn’t enough, the trio also swam in meets in Grand Forks, Castlegar, Nelson, Trail and Kimberley, British Columbia.

Mayor Mike Stark says he never asked Police Chief Mike Powell to step down. “That is illegal,” says Stark, who confirms he has put Powell on administrative leave. Termination proceedings through the local Civil Service Commission have begun. Powell received notice of pending termination Sept. 25. A series of hearings will take place this week, with a final determination by the CSC expected within the month.

The Cutter Theater will be busy in October. Not only is watercolorist Susan Rohrback the artist of the month, but classical musician James Russel Hunley is scheduled in concert Saturday. A lecture, “Theodore Roosevelt: Soldier/Statesman,” is planned Oct. 24. Auditions for the annual “Deck the Falls” will be held Oct. 22. Local thespians will present Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” in December.

A car equipped as a drunken-driving simulator is making the rounds of high schools in Spokane this week. At West Valley, Ferris and Central Valley high schools, students can drive the Dodge Neon through an obstacle course, allowing them to feel just how little control they have if they drink and drive. The simulator will be available for anyone to try from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Dishman Dodge, 7700 E. Sprague.

With flu season just around the bend, the Tri-County Health District is providing immunization clinics throughout the month. After an extensive inspection, Ruen-Yeager & Associates deemed bleachers at Memorial Field unsafe. The inspection revealed decay in several locations. A committee of baseball league representatives, City Council members and the city’s parks director will hold public meetings to gather information on designing new bleachers. The meetings will be held Oct. 28 and Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at Sandpoint City Hall.

Boundary County Commissioners announced that road and bridge supervisor Matt Shipp will resign as of Oct. 15. Commissioners are advertising the job through Idaho Job Service. The job description has changed from requiring a civil engineer for the position to three years of personnel supervision and five years road-building experience. An engineering background is still preferred.

Two award-winning documentaries are among the highlights of the Queer Student Association Film Festival beginning Friday at the University of Idaho.
“Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker,” is about the work of the physician whose research forced the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental disorders. It will show Friday at 9:45 p.m. “Out at Work,” a movie about the struggle for rights in the workplace, was shown at the Sundance Film Festival this year and is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday. All films will be shown in the UI Student Union Building’s Borah Theatre, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.
The festival is held in conjunction with National Coming Out Day.

Kellogg High School’s Interact Club constructed a 3-1/2-mile trail around Kalispell Island. The club joined with the Castlegar, British Columbia, Interact Club for the project, which included defining the trail, removing brush, logs, roots and other debris. Interact Clubs are sponsored by Rotary International.
