Ten years ago: Pope John Paul II journeyed to eastern France, where he addressed the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights.

Five years ago: The government issued a report absolving the FBI of wrongdoing in its final assault in Texas on the Branch Davidian compound, which went up in flames, killing as many as 85 people.

One year ago: Scientists reported the Mars Pathfinder had yielded what could be the strongest evidence yet that Mars might once have been hospitable to life. The House of Representatives opened its own set of hearings on campaign fund-raising abuses.
