Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee

Ties are not fun.

If you fessed up, you’d admit it’s no fun kissing your sister. (Please don’t send this to my sisters!)

I hope to break out of this stalemate rut this week.

Yours truly and my guest, Lake City High activities secretary Marsha Hagen, finished deadlocked as we each picked 8 of 10 correctly. For a second straight week, the game that could have decided the top picker involved Post Falls, which managed a 7-7 tie with Chewelah after its game the week before was canceled when Nampa was fogged in at the Boise airport.

Barring a natural disaster - flood, earthquake, for example - Post Falls’ game will be played and a winner decided because league games can’t finish in a tie.

The scoreboard after five weeks: Scribe 44 of 55 (.800), Guests 42 of 55 (.764).

My guest this week is North Idaho College athletic director and all-around good guy Jim Headley.

A CdA native, Headley has worn several different hats over the years - from longtime assistant baseball coach at NIC to American Legion coach to president of the CdA Men’s Softball Association. He takes a stab at soothsayer this week.

Lake City at Lewiston: The Timberwolves know what it’s like to sleepwalk through a game (see Cheney). Although this contest has no impact on state playoff berths (Lewiston is in its first year in Division I), there’s plenty of pride on the line.

LC upset then-defending state champ Lewiston last year, rallying from a 20-0 halftime deficit to win 27-26.

The Timberwolves will face their toughest defensive opponent to date. But LC has a defense worth boasting about, too.

And the Bengals will have their hands full with LC quarterback Chad Troxel.

In what should be a good game … LC 27, Lewiston 13.

Guest: Lake City will be up after its victory over Sandpoint. Chad Troxel will have best game to date. LC 28, Lewiston 14.

Coeur d’Alene at Sandpoint: Ouch! Close your eyes Vikings fans. This could be ugly for two reasons:

1) Sandpoint wants to rebound from a poor showing against LC. 2) It’s the Bulldogs’ homecoming.

The losing streak reaches 13 for CdA. Sandpoint 31, CdA 13.

Guest: Sandpoint quarterback Paul Nieman will demonstrate his throwing ability. Sandpoint 35, CdA 10.

Moscow at Post Falls: This is the breakthrough week for the Trojans. If Post Falls can hold a solid Chewelah team to a touchdown, it can corral Moscow.

The Trojans will keep the ball on the ground in a low-scoring game. Post Falls 15, Moscow 7.

Guest: Post Falls will get its offense and defense together at game time. Post Falls 21, Moscow 14.
