Workshops Explain Worm Use, Composting

From Staff Reports

As the worm turns, there’s eventually compost.

For all those interested in using worms to munch trash and make great garden soil, the Spokane Master Composters offer several opportunities next week.

On Oct. 16 from 1-2:30 p.m., there’s a worm workshop at the Spokane County WSU Cooperative Extension Building, 222 N. Havana. Pre-registration is required. Call 477-2048.

The workshop features Mary Appelhof, author of “Worms Eat My Garbage” and an expert on worm composting. Her visit is sponsored by the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System and Washington Water Power Co.

On Oct. 17 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Appelhof will give a three-hour workshop for school teachers at Finch Arboretum. Pre-registration is required and space is limited; call the city at 456-7403.

Also on Oct. 17 at Finch Arboretum is the Compost Fair, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

People can learn how to get a “hot” compost pile going and see what finished compost looks like. Appelhof will also display her worm composting techniques from noon to 2 p.m.

Spokane County residents who attend the event can take home a free plastic yard-trimmings bin. One bin per household is allowed; proof of residence within the county will be requested.
