Ten years ago: Vice President Bush and Democrat Michael Dukakis prepared for their second debate of the 1988 campaign, scheduled to take place in three days.

Five years ago: Thousands of Somalis demonstrated in the capital of Mogadishu to support warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid, an event that coincided with the arrival of special U.S. envoy Robert Oakley. In Greece, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, led by Andreas Papandreou, won a solid majority of seats in parliamentary elections .

One year ago: The International Campaign to Ban Land Mines and its coordinator, Jody Williams, were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. Defying the Republican Congress a second time, President Clinton vetoed a ban on certain late-term abortion procedures.
