FERRY COUNTY Keller
Josh Millard, a member of the 30-Milers 4-H Club, brought home two big prizes from the recent Ferry County Fair.
Showing his 1,205-pound steer, Millard earned Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer and Reserve Champion Steer Fitting and Showing honors. Sandra Kay’s of Colville supported the steer at sale.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
After Monday, kids in Moses Lake might no longer complain there’s nothing to do. That’s when the Boys and Girls Club of the Columbia Basin opens its doors.
A dream of this community for years, the club will be in the old Larson Reserve Center building. Club director Ryan Graves says he has big plans for programs and plans to be a strong advocate for kids in the area. He is working with the Grant County Transit Authority to provide transportation to the club.
LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport
Students at the local high school will decide this week whether to support a parent request for random drug testing.
“This is what we want (testing), but we’d like to have it come from the kids,” said parent Don Strate. Parent Patti Ensor, who sees positives in drug testing, questioned during a school board meeting last week how the district would fund such a program.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Cusick
Longtime area educator Coral “Corky” Hammond will be honored with a roast and tribute Oct. 17.
Hammond, who is suffering from cancer, is a Cusick High graduate and former special education teacher not only in his hometown, but also at Riverside schools.

Parents of home-schoolers in the Cheney School District are invited to a meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday in the Fisher Building board room. Parents can learn about district resources for home-school families.

STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah
Southern Stevens County residents have been talking about a series of billboards popping up along Highway 395. The Federal Scenic Highways Act allows signs in counties without zoning laws if there are three businesses along a 500-foot stretch of highway. Stevens County does not have zoning laws in most unincorporated areas, thus the billboards for a plumber, nursery and veterinary clinic are legal.
WHITMAN COUNTY Pullman
The Clothesline Project, a tribute to women who are victims and survivors of violence, will highlight the 1998 YWCA Week Without Violence Monday through Friday on the Washington State University campus.
Painted T-shirts, designed to raise awareness about violence against women, Will hang on Glenn Terrell Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. all week.
WSU political scientist Faith Lutze will speak Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the CUB, room 214.
Tuesday, a sexual assault awareness program will begin at the CUB at 7 p.m.
The discussion “Dating … things that are just unacceptable” will be led by WSU students Daisy McIntyre and Patrick McAdams at noon Wednesday in the CUB’s Butch’s Den.
Thursday’s Take Back the Night march starts at 8 p.m. in the CUB auditorium.
The activities will end Friday with the seminar “Reporting Violence and Harassment” at 11:45 a.m. in room B-7 of the CUB.

The featured artist for the month of October at the Art Gallery is Emma Randolph of Spokane. The show includes a variety of original water colors and other artworks, as well as unframed originals.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
Bonner County schools will split a $381,152 grant from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation. The grant will be used to increase the emphasis on improving reading and literacy skills. All district elementary and middle schools, along with the alternative high school, will benefit from the grant.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
Holly Swanson, author of “Set Up & Sold Out,” will speak Friday at the Chic’n Chop Restaurant. Swanson’s book is the result of six years of research into the environmental movement. A no-host dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with a musical performance by the Bowbenders at 6:30 and Swanson speaking at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Boundary County Property Owners Association.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
The Coeur d’Alene Art Association will host an all-media painting exhibit Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Terry Lee Gallery. Lee will present a slide presentation at 4 p.m. from a recent trip to Zimbabwe, where he taught art to African boys. Lee also will show slides of African wildlife. LATAH COUNTY Potlatch
The newly formed Potlatch Historical Society will make its debut Nov. 7 with a special history day entitled “Remember the Mercantile.” The event is scheduled from 2-6 p.m. at Potlatch High School. Those attending are invited to bring old photos or memorabilia from the Mercantile. Donations toward new scanning equipment and other supplies are welcome. In addition, three presentations will be offered: “Idaho Women and the Land,” a presentation on Potlatch history and “People in the Palouse.”
