A faculty union at Central Washington University has been denied recognition for collective bargaining by the board of trustees.

In a unanimous vote Friday, the trustees decided to retain the Faculty Senate rather than agree to bargain with the United Faculty of Central, which won a representation election in May 1997.

Leaders of the union, affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association, released a statement saying the board “has chosen to insult and belittle the CWU faculty.”

Besides pay, faculty concerns include declining morale, tension with the school administration and reduced funding for programs, said Patricia Garrison, another union member.
