Spokane’s new Skate Park, located under Interstate 90 between McClellan and Browne, will host it’s first local competition on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Inline skate preliminaries takes place from 8-10:30 a.m.; bicycles from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and skateboards from 1-3:30 p.m.

Final competitions for the top three contestants in each age class and category starts at 3:30 p.m. Categories include under 13, 13-15 and 16-18 years old.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category. All participants receive T-shirts. Registration forms and waivers are available at Down Works, Zumies, Spoke and Sport and Winter Sport.

Teen help needed. Organizers for Family-a-Fair, which takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Spokane Convention Center, are looking for 65 students to volunteer and help with activities. Students will work in areas such as helping young children with art projects, wearing character costumes and walking around the Fair, giving tours of the fire safety house, helping celebrity readers with story telling, decorating and other tasks. Win cash. Write fast. The deadline for the Spokane Civic Theatre’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” essay contest is 5 p.m. Friday. The contest is open to all students in grades 4 and up. In a 500-word essay, describe a time you learned more about someone by “standing in their shoes.” Winning entries receive $100 and a $50 gift certificate to Boo Radley’s. The Civic Theatre opened it’s adaptation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” this month. It shows through Oct. 30. For details on the contest, visit the Spokane Civic Theatre office at 1020 N. Howard St. (across from the Arena) during regular business hours.
