Events Focus On Dam Breaching

From Staff Reports

The conflict between dams and salmon will be the topic of back-to-back events next week.

The Port of Lewiston and the Sierra Club square off Oct. 22 in a debate over whether the lower four Snake River dams have to be sidelined in order to bring back salmon and steelhead. David Doeringfeld, administrator of the Port of Lewiston, will debate Jim Baker, a member of the Sierra Club’s salmon recovery project.

The hourlong debate begins at 7 p.m. at the Post Falls City Hall Chambers and will be followed by an hour of questions for the two panelists from the audience. It is sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Kootenai Environmental Alliance.

The debate also will be broadcast on Channel 13.

The next day, U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., convenes a regional summit to discuss the downside of dam removal. The forum is called, “Breaching the Dams: At What Cost?”

The program is being held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shilo Inn on Third Avenue. Gorton is the keynote speaker.
