Rodgers Proposes Bridge Initiative

City Councilwoman Cherie Rodgers has filed a proposed ballot initiative that would require a citizens’ vote before public money can be used to build the Lincoln Street bridge.

The initiative would amend the city charter, which already requires public votes on major projects such as coliseums, convention centers or planetariums.

Before citizens would have a chance to vote on the bridge funding, they would vote on the charter amendment.

The city attorney is reviewing the proposed initiative.

The City Council could either put it directly on the ballot or require Rodgers to collect signatures from voters to put it on the ballot. About 9,000 signatures are required.

The earliest the proposed charter amendment could appear on a ballot would be in the spring.

Rodgers has long opposed the plan to build the bridge across the Spokane River gorge.

“I am concerned about our city’s ability to adequately preserve the character and natural environment of the Spokane River central falls area for the enjoyment and betterment of future generations,” said Rodgers in her letter proposing the initiative.
