All downwinders are invited to the Oct. 28 noon meeting of the Ritzville Chamber of Commerce. Featured guest speaker Steve Corker of the Hanford Health Information Archives will explain how the archives collects and makes public the health histories of people who lived, worked or spent time near the Hanford Nuclear Reservation between 1944 and 1972. The no-host lunch is held at the Whisperin’ Palms restaurant.

A special Halloween celebration is planned for Oct. 31. Local businesses will be decorated, and special prices will be the theme of the day throughout the merchant district. When the sun sets, all tricksters are invited to a community Halloween party at the Old Fire Department. Fun gets under way at 4 p.m. and includes a cake walk, fortune teller, treats and games.

Ephrata
The Linedancing Grannies are giving kids in fourth through sixth grades something to do after school. In conjunction with the Ephrata Recreation Department, the Grannies will be teaching linedancing on Mondays and Wednesdays through Nov. 18.
Transportation is included in the $5 fee.

Davenport
Local taxpayers are being asked for a $15,000 levy to maintain Memorial Hall. “It’s less than the cost of a medium pizza,” local park and recreation board members say, noting the owner of a $50,000 home would pay $5.55 on the one-year assessment. A $25,000 maintenance and operation levy on the 50-year-old building was defeated in 1997.

Newport
Prosecutor Tom Metzger says his office does not want the Mountain Top Kennel dog abuse case to drag on three more years. He is working on a deal to settle an appeal of the 1997 case in which Swen and Jeannette Bergman were convicted of 16 counts of second-degree animal cruelty. Metzger says any deal he makes would put Jeannette in jail. “She will do time or there will be no settlement,” he says. More than 200 dogs were seized from the Bergmans’ home in January of 1997.

Medical Lake
Two longtime residents of Medical Lake have been appointed to the planning commission by Mayor Jim Hill. Joyce Callaway and Lois Feken have lived in Medical Lake for more than two decades each. Both said they support controlled growth. They will replace Michael Flatt and Scott Baker.
STEVENS COUNTY
Colville
Local police are cracking down on a string of recent business burglaries. Last week, four juveniles and one adult were arrested in connection with a break-in and malicious mischief at Barman’s Country Store on Oct. 11. The suspects, ranging from 13 to 15 years old, were spotted by a citizen riding his bike in the alley. Kettle Falls man Neil Goodell, 18, is the sole adult in custody.

The ASWSU Outdoor Recreation Center and Students Book Corporation presents Spokane author Rich Landers in a Brown Bag Adventure Program Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. in CUB 123. Landers will present his program “Paddle Routes of the Inland Northwest,” and will be available to sign his book of the same name, as well as “100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest.”

The St. Maries Chamber of Commerce announced the “Christmas in St. Maries” schedule of events. Major Dick Deam of Sandpoint has been appointed the new commander of the 116th Engineer Battalion of the Idaho Army National Guard. Deam replaced Lt. Col. Robert Field in a change of command ceremony Sept. 12. He has served in the 116th Engineer Battalion since 1985. The battalion has armories in Bonners Ferry, Post Falls, Moscow, Lewiston, Orofino and Grangeville.

Smoky winged ash aphids have inhabited the University of Idaho campus and various areas of the Palouse during their annual migration. Frank Merickel, collection manager of UI’s entomology museum, said the aphid is migrating from its summer host of fir tree roots to its winter host of bark crevices in ash trees and shrubs. He said the aphids don’t pose a health problem.

A basic first aid class will be offered Oct. 28-29 at the Troy elementary school building from 6 to 10 p.m. Standard Red Cross first aid and CPR will be taught by Chris Reichert. The course is a fall term adult education class sponsored by Troy public schools.
