Spokane-based supermarket Tidyman’s and Supervalu Inc., a large grocery wholesaler, have announced the completion of the merger of their grocery operations in Washington, Idaho and Montana.

According to the agreement, first announced in May, employee-owned Tidyman’s becomes majority owner of a new company, Tidyman’s, LLC., and will operate eight Supervalu supermarkets that do business in Montana as County Market. Tidyman’s will also operate Dissmore’s IGA in Pullman.

No cash changed hands in the transaction. Tidyman’s will have a 60 percent share in the new company, while Supervalu will control 40 percent. Tidyman’s will then operate 21 stores with 2,100 employees.

All stores are expected to retain their names and management, and no layoffs have been announced.

Minneapolis-based Supervalu is the nation’s largest grocery wholesaler, with sales of $16.6 billion in 1997.
