Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee
The weeks following perfect performances are generally dreadful.
My 6-of-10 showing last week brought the overall percentage to an even .800, putting extra pressure on the Scribe going into the final week of the regular season.
Please welcome my traditional season-ending guest, southpaw co-worker Jim Meehan.
The overall series is 2-1-1, tilted ever so slightly to the left. But Mr. Prep will make it two straight victories and pull even with Mr. Seahawk.
(Editor’s note: It should be noted that my victory last year was based on point differential because we picked the same winners. This really inflames Meehan.)
By the way, I’ve won the overall series against the Guests. The scoreboard reads: Lee 68 of 85, Guests 63 of 85.
The following space is reserved for a comment from Meehan: . (Editor’s note: That’s some of the best writing Meehan’s produced this year.)
(Editor’s note II: “And that’s your best writing ever!” Meehan said.)
(Editor’s Note III: “They oughta rename this thing ‘Panhandle Picks with Jim Meehan’ since I have a better record.”)
Lake City at Coeur d’Alene: The bye gave the Timberwolves an opportunity to rest some banged-up bodies.
The Vikings need a bye after last week’s embarrassing 39-0 loss at Post Falls.
LC gets healthy in more ways than one heading into the state playoffs. Enough said. LC 41, CdA 7.
Guest: T-Wolves haven’t beaten an opponent with a winning record, but they’ve drilled sub-.500s. CdA is 1-7. Another trip to the dentist’s office. LC 42, CdA 13.
Post Falls at Sandpoint: Defense and special teams will decide which team is headed to the state playoffs. Offense has been an inconsistent element for both teams.
Post Falls’ defense threw a shutout last week, essentially held Lake City to one touchdown and managed a 7-7 tie with Chewelah.
Sandpoint’s defense has improved, too. But the Trojans are playoff-bound. PF 13, Sandpoint 10 (and it could go to overtime).
Guest: I wish to thank excitable Trojans coach Jeff Choate, who reminds me of Bill Cowher without the spittle, for crediting the media for last week’s win. That would make us 1-0 and still in the IEL playoff chase, no? Seriously, everything favors Post Falls except for this logic-challenged reporter. Sandpoint 21, PF 19.
St. Maries at Bonners Ferry: We could offer comparative scores in Intermountain League games. But my money’s on Lumberjacks quarterback Trent Duffey.
Duffey, you may recall, won three games in the waning seconds last year in basketball, including a 3-pointer from his shoelaces just inside midcourt in a state opener. Hail Mary! Hail the Lumberjacks. St. Maries 22, BF 21.
Guest: Badgers won’t need a mudslide, just good pass defense against Duffey. No road north, but there’s an avenue to state for Badgers. BF 27, St. Maries 20.
