Cheney Seeks Volunteers

Amy Scribner Staff writer

Cheney schools could use a little extra energy, say district officials.

In its back-to-school newsletter, the district calls for volunteers to give a few hours in Cheney classrooms. Volunteers cover all aspects of the classroom experience, from working on computers to listening to young readers or helping in other special projects.

Potential volunteers are asked to call the office of the school where they’re interested in helping out.

Scholarship winners announced

Three South Side students have received scholarships from Gonzaga Prep for the 1998-99 school year.

Tom Feulner, a freshman, won the Johnston-Hanson Foundation Scholarship. He is the son of Robert and Sue Feulner.

Megan Garcia, a freshman, won the Ray “Doc” Mauro Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Stacie Garcia.

Liberty to award contract

The Liberty School District board of directors will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight to award a bid contract for district construction.

A new wing will be added to Liberty High School, and the district’s wastewater treatment plant will be updated.

Money for the project comes from a $3.1 million bond voters passed in February. Before that, voters had rejected nine previous attempts by the district to pass a bond issue.
