Five years ago: The Labor Department reported the nation’s unemployment rate edged down to a two-year low of 6.7 percent the previous month.

One year ago: Arizona Gov. Fife Symington was convicted of lying to get millions in loans to shore up his collapsing real estate empire. Symington, who resigned as governor, is appealing his convictions on six counts after one count was later thrown out. The U.S. Senate voted to ban most federal financing for abortions provided by the managed-care industry.
